This is the electromagnet assembly from an unidentified water(?) pump which i received in a 'grab bag' box of crap from Electronic Goldmine. It was initially oriented across the string, but that direction was much less sensitive. There are two coils, connected in series (as they were wired in the pump). the fingers are the steel core thing which surrounded the sealed part of the pump mechanism (inside of which was a magnetic rotor). The core is 'U' shaped. On the bottom of the 'U' I stuck a hard drive voice-coil magnet. The coils then go straight to an old phono preamp and on to a (decent) klipsch set of powered speakers.
