The hole below the speaker is a total unknown. The case has a matching hole but there is nothing there for a control. Behind the hole is a transformer between the antenna input and the first stage.

It was a hotel radio so it could have been some sort of key thing to disable the radio for those who hadn't paid to use it. I think pretty much any metal in the wrong place in that area would completely screw up the tuning.
