egyptian engraving on MDF

This is the first complex engraving i've done. It was engraved from a DXF file posted on cnczone using a 1/2" HSS v-cutting router bit (it was the most 'pointy' bit i could find in my small collection). After it was done i tried to stain the MDF with an oil-based stain. Sadly the stain did exactly the opposite than what i was intending. The surface of the MDF is darker than the routed section. Oh well.

Still looks pretty cool! What about varnishing/sealing the MDF before engraving so the stain won't 'stain' the non-carved surface as much?

That is a good thought. I have been meaning to try painting the surface a darker color and cutting through that. But spraying it with a sealer of some sort, cutting, and then staining might do the trick. I also plan to try cutting, painting, and sanding to end up with paint only in the engraved sections. I suspect I would lose the detail doing that, though.
